Background
The plot of Nazoraete yuki no kikusui (傚花雪菊水) is unknown to us.
Design
This diptych is from Yoshitaki's earlier (still Edo-period) years of activity, before the use of aniline dyes. A deluxe production, it features furikake (lit., "sprinkling": 振掛 simulated gold in the form of copper-rich brass) on both sheets, and kirazuri (sprinkled mica: 雲母摺) in the black bokashi (lit., "shading off" or gradation printing: 暈) in the sky on the left sheet.
Another impression is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (#11.36081a-b).
